It was established by the government of India on 26 September, 1942 as an autonomous body that has emerged as the largest research and development organisation in India. It is funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology but operates as an autonomous body through the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The President of CSIR is “Prime Minister of India”[currently Mr. Narendra Damodar Das Modi as on today].
The research and development activities of CSIR include aerospace engineering, structural engineering, ocean science, life science, metallurgy, chemicals, mining, food, petroleum, leather, and environment science.
