Indian Penal Code - IPC


IPC was assented (or drafted) and enacted on 6 October, 1860; and came into force on 1 January, 1862. It is the official criminal code of India. It is a comprehensive code intended to cover all substantive aspects of the criminal law. The first law commission of India which was established in 1834 (under the Charter Act of 1833), under the Chairmanship of Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay, IPC was drafted.

After the India-Pakistan partition, dominion of India remain continue with Indian Penal Code (IPC), while dominion of Pakistan continues independently as Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
